Hirakud Dam, Odisha

It is built over the Mahanadi River, 15 km from Sambalpur, Odisha. It is the longest earthen dam in the world. After Independence, it is the first major multipurpose river valley project. The Hirakud dam area is spread with the artificial lake over 743 Sq Km. on 12, April 1948 Late Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for the dam.

Tehri Dam, Uttarakhand

It is the tallest dam in India, and it has been ranked No. 10 in the world. The height of the dam is 26.5 m i.e, 855 ft. In India, it is the biggest hydroelectric power plant. It is built on the bank of the river Bhagirathi in New Tehri, Tehri Garhwal District in Uttarakhand. In 1978 the construction of the dam was started but due to environmental, financial, and social impacts, it got delayed and was completed in 1988. The dam distributes the power to many states – Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

Bhakra Dam, Himachal Pradesh

It is a concrete gravity dam built on the river Sutlej in Bhakra Village, Bilaspur District, Himachal Pradesh. Nangal Dam in Punjab is situated downstream of Bakra dam. The dams together are called as Bakra-Nangal dams. The Bakra-Nangal dam is the second-tallest dam in Asia. The height of the dam is approx 207.26 m and was the only dam in Asia to produce the 1500 MW of power in 2013. In 1948 the construction was started and in 1963 it was completed.

Sardar Sarovar Dam, Gujarat

The dam was built by cement gravity on the river Narmada in Narmada District, Gujarat. It was constructed to supply electricity and water to four states, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. On 5th April 1961 then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone. It is the second-largest concrete dam in the world. The construction began in 1987, but the Supreme Court ordered to hold back the project in 1995 due to Narmada Bachao Andolan by the people. It got completed and inaugurated by the Prime Minister in 2017.

Koyna Dam, Maharashtra

The dam is constructed with the rubble-concrete on the river Koyna which arises in Mahabaleshwar, a hill station in the Sahyadri ranges. It is one of the largest dams in Maharashtra. It is the largest hydroelectric power plant in India. Because of the high electricity generating potential Koyna River is appraised as the ‘Lifeline of Maharashtra.” To see the dam the travelers have to take a permission letter from Pune.

Gandhi Sagar Dam, Madhya Pradesh

The dam is built on the river Chambal. It is one of the four major dams constructed on the River Chambal. It is located in the Mandsaur district, Madhya Pradesh. Furthermore, it is constructed by masonry gravity. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone on 7th March 1954. The dam completed its construction in 1960. In the year 1970 additional downstream dams were completed.

Maithon Dam, Jharkhand

The word Maithon has come from “Mai ka Sthan” which means Goddess Maa Kalyaneshwari. It is located 48 Km from Dhanbad, Jharkhand. The dam is 15,712 ft long and 165 ft high. The dam is built on the river Borakar. The Maithon Dam is famous for its distinct nature for its existence underground power station in the entire of Southeast Asia.

Ukai Dam, Gujarat

The dam is constructed on the river Tapi, Gujarat. It was built in the year 1972, for flood control, power generation, and irrigation. After Sardar Sarovar, it is the second-largest reservoir. The dam is earth-cum-masonry dam. Its barrier wall is 4,927 m long. It earth’s dam height is 105.156 m and the masonry dam height is 68.68 m.

Indira Sagar Dam, Madhya Pradesh

This dam is the largest in India, in the matter of the volume of water stored in the reservoir. It is located on the river Narmada, Narmada Nagar town, in the District Khandwa of Madhya Pradesh. On 23rd October 1984, the foundation stone was laid by Late Smt Indira Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India. In 1992, the main dam construction was started. The dam is a concrete gravity dam with 92 m high and 653 m long.

Baglihar Dam, Jammu and Kashmir

This dam is also known as the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project built on the Chenab River in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. The project involves two-stage of 450MW each. The first stage of the project was completed in 2008-09 and was devoted to the nation by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The second stage was completed in 2015-16 and was devoted to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
