1. Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Trivandrum, Kerala

It is believed as the most wealthy temple in the world. It is considered one of the most famous and interesting temples in South India. It was built in the 16th century and its architectural design is a fusion of Kerala Style and Dravidian Style.

2. Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

Ramanathaswamy temple, out of twelve is one of the jyotirlinga temples. It is located on the Rameshwaram island of Tamil Nadu and was re-constructed during the 17th century. This temple is famous for its corridor which is said to be the longest in the world and was built in the 11th or 12th centuries. There are three corridors. The first corridor was built in the 12th century and was renovated later. The second corridor has 108 shiva linga and statues of Ganapati. The third corridor has 1212 pillars set on an uplifted platform and its height is close to 23 feet.

3. Sri Venkateshwara Temple, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

It is believed that Lord Vishnu appeared here to save human beings from the troubles of kali yuga. The temple is located on the hills. The hill contains seven peaks, which represent the seven heads of Adisesha. Venkatadri is the seventh peak of the hill where the temple is situated.

4. Chennakeshava Temple, Belur, Karnataka

It is among the famous temples in South India. It was built in the 12th century by king Vishnuvardhan and it took 103 years to finish. The temple is marvelous for its sculptures and architecture.

5. Meenakshi Temple, Madurai, Tamil Nadu

It is a Hindu historic temple located near the Vaigai River. The temple is devoted to the goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her partner Sundareshwarar, a form of Shiva. It was built in the early 7th century and was modified in the 16th century.

6. Guruvayur Temple, Guruvayur, Kerala

It was built more than 5000 years ago. It is to be known as one of the oldest temples in South India. It is mentioned as “Booloka Vaikuntam” which means “The holy abode of Vishnu on Earth”.

7. Annapoorneshwari Temple, Horanadu, Karnataka

It is devoted to the Goddess of Food. It is located on the banks of the river Bhadra. It is believed that the statue of the Goddess is built by sage Agastya. To reach the main temple the devotees have to climb many steps.

8. Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

It was built in the 7th century, one of the oldest temples in South India. This temple is marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year in the months of December and January the Mamallapuram Dance Festival is held in Mamallapuram and during this festival, it is the best time to visit this temple.

9. Mahabaleshwara Temple, Gokarna, Karnataka

An ancient temple and is very famous for its classical Dravidian architecture. The Atmalinga of Lord Shiva was abundantly placed at Gokarna about 6 feet under the ground and worshipers can touch the top of the Linga which has a cow’s ear shape.

10. Murudeshwara Temple, Murdeshwar, Karnataka

This temple is located near the beaches of Bhatkal. The statue of Lord Shiva is the second tallest statue in the world and it is 123 feet in height. It has 22 storied and it is 72 meters high gopuram which was built in the year 2008.

11. Murugan Temple, Tiruchendur, Tamil Nadu

This temple is built with red sandstone rocks. It is situated at the Tuticorin beach. During the month October-November, the most popular Skanda festival is celebrated.

12. Sri Krishna Temple, Udupi, Karnataka

A devotee Kanakadasa was refused to enter the temple due to his cast and he was tied. The statue of the Shri Krishna turned opposite the side of the entrance where the devotee was tied. Since then Sri Krishna’s statue is facing the opposite side of the entrance.

13. Ranganathaswamy Temple, Trichy, Tamil Nadu

The temple is surrounded by the river Kaveri and the river Kollidam. It was originally built in the 6th century in the Dravidian traditional architecture and rebuilt in the early 14th century because it was robbed and demolished by the Delhi Sultanate armies. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the temple was developed with many more Gopurams.

14. Arunachaleswarar Temple, Thiruvannamali, Tamil Nadu

It was built by Chola Dynasty in the 9th century. It is located in the Anamalai Hills. The temple is associated with five elements “the Pancha Bhoota Stalas” and the main element is Agni. It is one of the largest temples in India as it covers 10 hectares of land.

15. Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

Recently this temple completed 1000 years of its existence. It was built b Chola Emperor between 1003 and 1010 AD and it is one of the famous temples in UNESCO World Heritage Site.

16. Kailasanathar Temple, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu

It was built by Pallava Dynasty between 685 – 705 AD. It is located near the river Vegavathi.  It is said that there are 58 shrines that denote the incarnations of Lord Shiva.

17. Ekambareswarar Temple, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu

The temple is associated with five elements “the Pancha Bhoota Stalas” and the main element is Earth. It was built in the 7th century. This temple covers 25 acres of land and is the largest in India.

18. Sarangapani Temple, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu

It was built in the 7th century and is believed that it was built more than 2000 years ago. The height of the main gate is 173 ft (53m) and has eleven tiers.

19. Vadakkunnathan Temple, Thrissur, Kerala

The best time to visit this temple is in the months of April and May during these months the Pooram festival is celebrated with fireworks. The architectural style was built in the Kerala style. The mural paintings represent the scenes from the Mahabharata.
